Maidenhead Junior girls win 4 events at Staines Regatta On Saturday 24th JulyMaidenhead Rowing Club entered 10 crews (5 senior and 5 junior crews) in this years Staines Regatta held over a 500 metre down stream course. Top performances came from the Advanced Junior girls squad who after winning National Championships in crew boats, switched to single sculls to help develop and master individual boat skills at this sprint regatta. Maidenhead Junior girls came home with a clean sweep winning single sculling titles at WJ14, WJ15, WJ16 and WJ 18 classes. In the WJ 14 single sculls class Maidenhead entered 3 scullers. First up was Chrissie Wright who racing against Robillard of Weybridge Ladies came home some four lengths behind. Aimee Campbell of Maidenhead who is quite new to racing in single sculls did well despite a poor start. Aimee was 1.5 lengths down at halfway when she pushed hard to get back on level terms. At the finish line Aimee just lost out by 2ft to Burrell of Reading. Ally Brooks of Maidenhead comfortably beat Richards of Reading in her first round, then Burrell of Reading in the semi-final. Racing Robillard of Weybridge Ladies ARC in the final Ally drew away from halfway to win by 2 lengths and take Maidenhead's first win of the day. In the WJ15 single sculls class Louise Entwistle had a bye to the semi-final. Louise won her semi-final by 3 lengths and had no trouble winning her final against Harknett of Reading RC to take Maidenhead's 2nd win of the day. The WJ16 single sculls event was a much closer contest for Maidenhead. Laurian Pepper raced against Douglas from Reading RC in the semi-final and came home in front by 1.5 lengths. In the final Laurian had to race hard neck and neck down the course being slightly led by Willis of Reading RC 'A'. Just before the finish line Laurian managed to raise her rate of striking enough to just get her boat in front and win the final by 2ft to take Maidenhead's 3rd win of the day. Two Maidenhead scullers entered the Womens Junior sculls event. Jo Wright raced Yates of Tideway Scullers to win a place in the final. Natalie Trinder had a good win against Bradshaw of Laytmer Upper School to set up an all Maidenhead final. In the final both Maidenhead scullers raced well with Jo Wright coming home 2 lengths ahead of Natalie Trinder to take Maidenhead's fourth and final win of the day. A new WJ15 double combination saw Charlotte Eynon racing with Ellie Bolton who is in her first year of sculling. Both girls raced well and came in 2 lengths behind Reading. Maidenhead's senior squad entered two fours. One of these fours got through the first round and then lost a close race. The other four lost a close race in the first round. In the Mens Senior 2 coxless pair Maidenhead had a bye to the final and although racing well they lost by a length. Mixed Novice 2x, raced well but had to contend with their boat that was taking on lots of water so they had to stop rowing at the halfway mark. WNOV single Karen Philips raced well in the Womens Novice
Sculls. |

Maidenhead Junior boys and girls win 14 events at Oxford City Royal Regatta and Sprint held on 21st and 22nd AugustMaidenhead Rowing Club juniors entered 20 events over the two day Regatta in Oxford and came home with 14 event wins and a cash prize of £300 for winning the Junior Victor Ludorum prize for the most successful club in Junior events over the two days. This cash prize was sponsored by Henley Schools Head of the River Race. City of Oxford Regatta had a record number of entries for this years regatta which meant at least 3 races each day for most of the Maidenhead junior crews. The end of season standard was high at this regatta. Racing on the Saturday was over a 1000m course, which tested athletes ability to cope with steering around two bends at firm pressure. Maidenhead Juniors won 7 out of 7 events on the Saturday. Winning crews for Maidenhead were as follows: WJ14 1x Ally Brooks. Also on the Saturday, Maidenhead Seniors entered 3 eights and one Novice four. The Mens Senior 2 eight had a good race in a straight final with Meles of Amsterdam and lost by a length. The Mens senior 4 eight beat Merton in the first round and then lost to Wolfson in the final by 2 lengths. The Womens Senior 3 eight had a good race all the way down the 1000m course with Falcon and were only half-a-length down at the finish. The Mens Novice four in their first regatta race competed well against Llandaff and finished just a couple of lengths down after 1000m. On the Sunday racing was over the shorter 500m course. Another full days racing program saw Maidenhead crews race throughout the day to reach the finals. Winning crews from Maidenhead on the Sunday were as follows: Event Sun 500m Crew Other competitors who competed on the Sunday were Anna Campbell (WJ12) who competed in the WJ13 single sculls going out to an Abingdon sculler by 2 lengths. Philip Clapp who competed in the J14 single sculls and narrowly lost to Hockley of Marlow after a good race. Aimee Campbell racing WJ14 single sculls had a good race against Parsons of City of Oxford RC and finished just one length down. Aimee Campbell and Chrissie Wright racing in WJ14 2x lost their first round by half a length. Matt Best who made it through to the final only to lose by a small margin to Bream from Peterborough. Laurian Pepper made it through to the finals of WJ16 1x and had a good race against Drury of Wallingford. After 2 clashes on the course the crews seemed to cross the line level. Drury of Wallingford was awarded the race by 2ft. Final regatta of the season for the Juniors will be at
Avon County 'Splash and Dash 350m multi-lane course' to be held at Coate
Water Park Swindon on Saturday 18th September. Lots of events for Juniors,

Maidenhead Juniors win 2 GB vestsMaidenhead Rowing Club's Group of Advanced Junior boys and girls had a very busy couple of weeks flying the flag for Maidenhead in Nottingham and taking part in trials for GB Junior selection for various events that are planned for the end July.GB Junior boys trialsMaidenhead's J16 boys Dave Jones and Sam Ashburner with coach Tom Jost have all been selected to participate at the Coupe de la Jeunesse to be held in Ravenna, Italy July 24th and 25th. Dave Jones has been selected to compete in the single sculls and Tom Jost has been appointed his GB coach. Sam Ashburner will either be in the Coupe quad or in the second single position. Both boys, Dave and Sam together with their coach Tom Jost should be congratulated on making it through the GB trials to gain selection for this International event.GB J16 trialsFour Maidenhead Junior girls (Charlotte
Weeks, Laurian Pepper, Louise Entwistle and Ally Brooks) entered their
first trials for GB J16 junior selection, for a GB/France match to take
place at the end of July. Trials took place over 1500mtrs at Holme
Pierrepont Nottingham on Friday 9th July. Maidenhead entered a double scull
in the morning trials and a quadrupple scull in the afternoon trials. Both
crews entered from Maidenhead were made up of girls racing above their age
group. Despite this, Louise Entwistle and Ally Brooks came very close to
causing an upset by pushing the National Schools J16 double sculls
champions, Newark RC all the way down the course, taking a slight lead at
the halfway point, and racing all the way to the finish line, and finishing
only 2 seconds behind Newark and 3 lengths ahead Hollingworth Lake RC who
won a silver at this age group at the recent National Schools. Charlotte
Weeks and Laurian Pepper then teamed up with Louise Entwistle and Ally
Brooks to compete in the quad time trials. This young crew also raced well
and finished in second place just 6 seconds behind Molesey RC and ahead of
Worcester RC and LEH School. Both crews demonstrated that they were up on
the pace of the leading crews in the country at this J16 level. These
results set the girls up well for returning next year to compete again and
possibly win their first GB vests. |

Maidenhead crews win 3 titles at Marlow International RegattaMaidenhead Rowing Club entered 4 junior crews (including one composite crew) in this years Marlow International Regatta held at Dorney Lake, on Saturday 19th June. This prestige regatta is seen as a pre-cursor to Henley Royal regatta for the senior crews and a top class regatta for Junior crews. A stunning performance was seen from Maidenhead's WJ14 coxed quad of Rebekah Kerns (13), Aimee Campbell (14), Alice Ancora (13), Chrissie Wright (14) with cox Owen Davies. In a straight 7 boat final Maidenhead were drawn in lane 3 alongside Molesey Boat Club (National Schools Gold medal winners) in lane 2 and Surbiton High School (Bronze medallists at National Schools) drawn in lane 7. At the recent National Schools regatta held in May, this Maidenhead crew were not allowed to enter as they had two 13 year olds on board and the rules stated that athletes had to be a minimum 14 years of age. Going off the start at a fast pace Maidenhead were in 3rd position behind the leaders Molesey and Sir William Perkins, and ahead of Surbiton High School who were in 4th place. At 500meters Maidenhead pushed hard and moved up into second place. At the 1000 meter mark Maidenhead pushed on again and went passed Molesey to take a half length lead. From this point onwards this young Maidenhead crew drew away with every stroke finishing a clear 1.5 lengths ahead of 2nd place crew. Sir William Perkins who just piped Molesey Boat club on the line to take 2nd place. This was an excellent win against tough competition and now puts this Maidenhead crew up as the crew to beat at the National Rowing Championships in July. Maidenhead's WJ16 quad of Charlotte Weeks (15), Laurian Pepper (16), Louise Entwistle (15) and Ally Brooks (14) again demonstrated how well they could race with 3 of these girls racing above their age group. Following their Bronze medal win at this age group at National Schools they sculled well to lead from the start and come home a comfortable 3 lengths ahead of Upper Thames RC. Two of Maidenhead boys J14 squad - Sam Prosser and Mark Clover teamed up with Marlow RC and Claires Court School to race in an Octople. This was a pleasure to see as this composite crew led from the start and gradually drawing out a lead to about 2 lengths over established School crews from Latymer, Tiffin School, Westminster School and Radley Schools. Our recently put together boys J16 quad of Sam Ashburner, Matt Best, Max Gerrard and Dave Jones did extremely well to win through to the finals. In the finals they had a good scull but had to settle for 2nd place less than half-a-length behind Walton/Royal Docks composite. These boys will be going on to race in the qualifiers for Henley Royal Regatta next week and are expected to keep improving over the coming weeks. Maidenhead Mens squad entered an eight in the Senior 3 eights competition. Maidenheads recently formed mens 8 will be competing in the qualifiers for Henley Royal next week and took comfort in the fact that they managed to move from last position in the race finishing 4th in their heat, only a short distance (1 sec) behind the important 3rd place to qualify them for the next round.. Summary of Marlow International Regatta wins: WJ14 4x+ - Owen Davies cox, Rebekah Kerns, Aimee Campbell, Alice Ancora, Chrissie Wright. WJ16 4x - Charlotte Weeks, Laurian Pepper, Louise Entwistle & Ally Brooks. J14 8x+ - Marcus Clover, Sam Prosser with 4 boys from Claires Court - Jack Rider, Josh Cremin, Phil Clapp, Rubins Van der Valk and cox Anthony Toma and 2 boys from Marlow RC.

Maidenhead Junior squads win 13 events over two days racing at Marlow Town and Loughborough RegattasMaidenhead Juniors and coaches had a busy weekend with the junior squads sending its Beginners and Intermediates to Marlow Town Regatta on Saturday 12th June and the Advanced Juniors went back to Nottingham to compete at Loughborough Regatta on the Sunday. Marlow Town Regatta Maidenhead Junior boys win 2 events and the girls win 4. A great weekends racing for all juniors involved. Many good performances from new combinations of crews. Maidenhead Boys Both the boys' J13 & J14 quads put in brave efforts against strong opposition & will take much away from the experience for future events. The two wins for the boys at Marlow Town regatta came from the composite J14 Octople containing two Marlow boys, five Claires Court Boys Anthony Tomb (Cox) Jack Rider, Ruben van der Valk, Philip Clapp, and Josh Cremin. plus two Maidenhead R.C. boys of Sam Prosser and Marcus Clover who have only trained once together to beat the National Schools 2004 silver medallists Laytimer upper School by two lengths. This composite Octople crew will now race at Marlow International Regatta next week. The second win for the boys came from the J12 quad scullers of Jasper van der Valk(cox), Robert Ashburner, Josh Prosser, Bradley Halloren and Jack Beaumont who in their first race together beat the much fancied Royal Docklands R. C. by a good margin to win the final. Maidenhead Girls Maidenhead entered 6 events with 9 crews and won 4 events with the WJ12 2x Final being Maidenhead v Maidenhead. The day started with the WJ13 2X featuring Emma Alington and Harriet Ingall. The girls arrived nice and early only to find they had a row over...not bad but probably not as good as a couple more hours in bed. The two Maddies, Maddie Reynolds and Maddi van Noorden were our other entry in the WJ13 2X and they didn't have it quite so easy. They lost in the heat to Tideway Scullers by 1 1/2 lengths. Sadly Emma A and Harriet Ingall also lost out, after a hard row, in the final. The girls didn't have much time to hang around and mope or dissect performance, they had to gather themselves and get ready for the WJ13 4x+ heat. With Josh Prosser kindly coxing them, they faced City of Oxford and Evesham. It was a good race, with good steering and resulted in a win of 2 1/2 lengths. In the final of this event, which was virtually immediately after Emma A and Harriet Ingalls' defeat in the WJ13 2X mentioned above, they met Dragon School. They had a new cox, Anthony Toma a Claires' Court lad because Josh was now involved in his own event. This was a pretty tight race all the way down although Maidenhead had a slight lead from the start, neither crew gave up and in the end it was a win of 3/4 length to Maidenhead. Moving on to the WJ12 they also had two events the doubles and the quad. We had two crews in the doubles...Emma Kerns/Carmel Bevan and Anna Campbell/lucy Brockwell. Anna and Lucy went off first against City of Oxford who they beat by 1 1/2 lengths. Then Emma and Carmel were the next race down against Upper thames and Tideway Scullers. Emma and Carmel won the distance being "easily". This would mean that the two crews would face each other in the final, and would then have to get straight out of the competing doubles and jump into a quad where they had to row as a crew. The beauty of rowing, your competition in one race is suddenly on your side in the next race. The doubles final was quite close all the way, with Emma and Carmel pulling away in the last 300m to win by 2 lengths. So onto the WJ12 4x+ event which was a straight final, featuring the four girls from the two doubles - Emma Kerns, Carmel Bevan, Anna Campbell and Lucy Brockwell and Anthony Toma, as cox. Although they were on the Berkshire bank and had to contend with a lot of wash from a surge in cruiser traffic at that point, they beat Upper Thames and Tideway by 2 lengths. Apparently, when during the race the girls weren't responding to Antonio's calls for more work, he managed to grab their attention by rapping the stroke seat crossbar! Hey presto, full attention and more work. Our youngest girls, the WJ11s were also present and they also had two entries in the doubles and then combined to make up a quad. Lexy Dobson and Fifi Bevan had a disappointing end to their entry in the WJ12 2X, after being pushed way over on the Bucks station virtually into the approach lane by their opponents, Chitty and Cadoux-Hudson, from Dragon. They were further hampered when Lexy caught a crab that came and bit her hard in the eye. They tried hard to come back at Dragon and very nearly managed it. Dragon won by 1 length. Emily Webster and Rebecca Reeves were in the next doubles race down the course. They rowed very well and beat Tideway Scullers, the distance was "easily". In the final Emily and Rebecca faced Dragon (Chitty and Cadoux-Hudson again). They were rowing well until about half way when they began to drift out just a little wide, this gave Dragon the opportunity they were waiting for and Dragon went on to win by 4 lengths. Emily and Rebecca had to jump out of their double and get straight into the quad with Lexy and Fifi and set off for the final of the WJ11 4x+. Can you guess who the cox was? Yes Anthony Toma, he stayed until the very last race of the day just to help us out....and I think by this time he was quite enjoying racing with the girls. He did another fabulous job, keeping a good line and encouraging the girls to a win over Evesham, the distance being "easily". Chrissie Wright entered WJ14 single sculls and had a disappointing scull finishing some 3 lengths behind a sculler from Sir William Perkins School in a heat. . Loughborough Regatta in NottinghamMaidenhead Junior Girls win 7 events. Maidenhead Rowing Club entered 9 junior girls crews in this years Loughborough Regatta held at Holme Pierrepoint, Nottingham on Sunday 13th June. This was good multi-lane practice ready for National Championships in July. These top junior girls from Maidenhead demonstrated they were in a class of their own by winning just about all of their events in convincing style. Of the crews that did not win, Emma Kerns raced above her age group and competed in WJ13 single sculls and did well to finish 2nd in the final. Charlotte Weeks made it through to the final in WJ15 singles sculls and finished 2nd in the final. So 7 wins and 2 second places was the end result of an enjoyable, but long day in Nottingham. Summary of Loughborough 7 wins: Singles WJ14 1x - Ally Brooks Doubles WJ13 2x - Rebekah Kerns & Alice Ancora Quad WJ14 4x - Rebakah Kerns, Aimee Campbell, Alice Ancora, Chrissie Wright & cox Owen Davies The girls have entered 3 crews at Marlow International Regatta to be held on 19th June at Dorney Lake and we will be looking forward to seeing them race against some tough competition.. A WJ14 quad a WJ16 quad and a Womens Lwt quad have all been entered. The boys have entered a J16 quad a J14 quad and a composite Octuple. National Veterans ChampionshipsHeld at the same venue as Loughborough Regatta Maidenhead entered the following crews.. Mens Vet 'C' Quad Maidenhead entered a Veteran 'C' quad (Billy Brooks, Roger Henderson, Phil Lawton & Orlando Fricker) in this years Veteran Championships. In a straight final Maidenhead came up against a fast crew from Quintin. Maidenhead raced hard over the course keeping up with Quintin and finished in second place, 1.5 lengths behind Quintin and 10 lengths ahead of 3rd place crew from Llandaff/Mumbles. Womens Vet 'C' double and Vet 'D' single Janet Woffingdon and Karen Philips raced in a heat and then final of Vet 'C' doubles. Competition was strong and Maidenhead finished in 6th place in the final. Karen Philips raced in Vet 'D' singles and in a straight two boat final finished in 2nd place. Philips and Woffingdon also raced in the Loughborough Regatta for Womens Novice doubles and finished in 5th place.

Maidenhead crews win 5 National Schools Regatta medals in Nottingham.Maidenhead Rowing Club entered 13 crews in this years National Schools Regatta held at Holme Pierrepoint, Nottingham over 3 days - Friday 28th May through to Sunday 30th May. This was the largest entry the club has ever entered at this prestigious National Schools regatta and all the Maidenhead juniors performed well against the top sculling Schools in the country, 9 Maidenhead crews made it through to the finals which was a result in itself. Maidenhead's medal haul was very impressive. Two junior crews were crowned National Schools champions and Maidenhead also won a Silver and two Bronze medals over the three days. National Schools champions from Maidenhead for 2004 are Louise Entwistle and Ally Brooks who won Gold in the WJ15 doubles and David Jones who won Gold in J16 single sculls. Summary of National Schools medal wins:
Friday 28th May racing over 1000 mtrs First Gold medal came on the Friday's racing which was raced over 1000mtrs for J14's and J15 athletes. Maidenhead's crew of Louise Entwistle (15) and Ally Brooks (14) competed in the WJ15 2x for the Wycliffe Watermen Trophy against 30 doubles from across the UK. In their first heat they led all the way to win the heat by 4 lengths and go through to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals Maidenhead again raced well and led from the front maintaining a 2 length lead. In the final they were up against 5 other crews including Hollingworth Lake, who won at the recent Inter-regional trials. Maidenhead went off fast to ensure they were up with the leaders and then took control of the race pushing hard at 500mtrs to take a decisive lead and go on to win the Gold medal by 3 seconds. Lady Eleanor Holles 'A' crew taking Silver and Hollingworth Lake taking the Bronze. Max Gerrard competed in J15 single sculls and he did extremely well to make it through to the finals, finishing 2nd in his heat and then 3rd in the semi-finals to earn a place in the final. In the final Max did not have his best of starts but raced well to finish in a very credible 5th place and only 4 seconds off the Bronze. Aimee Campbell and Chrissie Wright entered WJ14 double sculls and did well to win their first heat and qualify for the semi-finals. In the semi-finals the racing was tough, Maidenhead were battling with Sir William Perkins for 3rd place, at 500mtrs Maidenhead were 4th 2.2 seconds down on Sir William Perkins and although pushing hard in the final 500mtrs Maidenhead were 2/100th of a second down at the finish line just missing out on a place in the final. Maidenhead also entered two boys crews in the J14 coxed quad sculls. The first crew of Markus Clover, Matthew Reeve, Tom Halloran, Sam Prosser with cox Josh Prosser competed in the Canterbury Cup for 1st quads. Maidenhead competed well and in their heat they finished a very close 2nd behind St Edwards School and qualified for the semi-finals. In the semi-finals the competition was again tough and Maidenhead had to settle for 6th place finishing 0.5secs behind Tiffin School. This was good experience for this newly formed crew. Claires Court School (Jack Rider, Josh Cremin, Phil Clapp, Rubins Van der Valk and cox Anthony Toma) also entered this event and they made it through to the final after some very close racing. In the final Claires Court raced extremely well to pick up a Bronze medal 0.3secs behind Silver and only 1.5seconds off the Gold medal. The second J14 boys coxed quad sculls entered the Nautics Cup. This crew comprised of Toby Courtney, Andrew Cadden, Adam Lilley, William Beaumont with cox Rebecca Reeve. This crew raced well in its heat finishing ahead of Windsor Boys 'B' crew but behind Dulwich, Abingdon and Merchant Taylors to take 4th place, just missing out on a place in the next round. This again was good experience for this new crew. Saturday 29th May racing over 2000mtrs Day 2 everyone feeling pleased with the Gold won on the first day. Maidenhead had 3 crews racing on the Saturday. Two girls crews entered the WJ16 2x and a boys crew entered Championship 2x. Of the 20 crews that entered the Simon Sears Cup for WJ16 2x in was great to see that the final 6 crews included two Maidenhead crews. Maidenhead 'A' crew of Charlotte Weeks and Laurian Pepper made it through to the finals after a tough first heat being drawn against Newark (current National Champions), Henley RC, The American Schools and Strathclyde R.C. In this heat Maidenhead sculled well to take 3rd place and qualify for the semi-finals. Maidenhead 'B' crew of Entwistle and Brooks raced against Nithsdale R.C. Runcorn, Queen Elizabeth High School and Grange School. Entwistle and Brooks came home clear winners of this heat 4 seconds up at 500mtrs and 12 seconds ahead at the finish line. Both crews were drawn in opposite halves of the draw for the semi-finals. Entwistle and Brooks again led a from the front in the semi-finals to win the semi-finals 1 second ahead of Hollingworth Lake with Henley a close third one second further behind Hollingworth Lake. Weeks and Pepper finished a good second in the other semi-final 5 seconds behind Newark and 6 seconds ahead of 3rd place Queen Elizabeth High School. The final was lined up to be a good race with Maidenhead already achieving a great success by having both its crews qualifying for the finals in this hotly contested event. The final was a very tough race for both Maidenhead crews with Newark taking the lead at 500mtrs with Hollingworth Lake and Maidenhead 'B' battling for 2nd place down the entire course. At the finish line Maidenhead 'B' crew (Entwistle and Brooks) took the bronze medal with Maidenhead 'A' crew finishing in 6th place. This was an excellent result for both crews as three of these girls were racing above their age group and can race at this age group again next year. The boys crew of Jones and Ashburner moved up to compete in the Championship doubles. In their first round they led from the front and finished 8 seconds ahead of Runcorn with St Peters in 3rd place. In the semi-final the racing became harder. Maidenhead were led to the 1000mtr mark by Windsor Boys School with Marlow one length behind. Maidenhead went on to win the semi-final by 4 seconds from Windsor Boys with Marlow finishing in 3rd place. Expectations were high for the final. American School led to the first 500mtrs with Maidenhead in 4th place. Windsor Boys took over the lead at 1000mtrs with American School in second place and Marlow in third position. Maidenhead pushed hard in the last 500mtrs but were unable to move into a medal position and finished 4th behind American School who took the Bronze, Marlow who took the Silver and Windsor Boys who took the Gold. Maidenhead boys can compete again in this event next year. Sunday 30th May racing over 2000mtrs Day 3 One Gold (WJ15 2x) and one Bronze (WJ16 2x) medal in the bag from the first two days of racing. Maidenhead had 5 crews competing on the last day and all crews were keen to add to the club medal honours. In the Championship Girls 2x Maidenhead's crew of Natalie Trinder and Jo Wright exceeded their expectations by finishing second in their first heat behind Kings Chester and ahead of Sir William Borlase School who took 3rd place. These 3 crews qualified for the semi-finals. In the semi-finals Maidenhead raced well and from being in 3rd place at 500mtrs they moved passed Marlow RC to take the all important 2nd place at 1000mtrs, this position they held until the finish line taking 2nd place by 2 seconds from Marlow and winning a place in the grand final. The final saw the top crews in the country at this age group come together. Maidenhead finished in 6th place in the final. Maidenhead entered a WJ16 quad which was a combination of the WJ15 2x and the WJ16 double. This crew combination demonstrated their ability to race and showed the high level of fitness they have achieved through the winter training. In their first race they were drawn against Canford, Sir William Borlase, Dame Alice and Lady E Holles. Under instructions to finish in a safe 3rd place and save themselves for the next round the girls were fast out of the blocks and led to the 500mtr mark at 1000mtrs they took the rating down and allowed Canford School to pass them finishing in a comfortable 2nd place. In the semi-final the draw was tough being drawn against most of the top quads - Molesey, Headington, Geo Watsons, Dame Alice and Star. Maidenhead new that they would have to race this semi-final to win a place in the final, at the 500mtr mark Maidenhead were in equal 3rd place behind Molesey and Geo Watsons. At 1000mtrs Molesey led with Geo Watsons in second place Headington now up to 3rd place and Maidenhead in 4th. With 500mtrs to go Maidenhead were still in 4th place 0.5sec off 3rd and 1.5secs off 2nd place. The last 500mtrs was a pleasure to see as this young crew turned on the speed and went passed two crews. The commentary was along the lines of "Maidenhead finishing like a train as they raised their rate of striking" and went passed both Headington and Geo Watsons to take a well deserved 2nd place and qualify for the final. The final was again a tough race but Maidenhead went from 4th to take 3rd place around the 1250mtr mark which they moved out to a clear 5 seconds lead to take the Bronze medal finishing behind Molesey and Lady E Holles. Three of the crew can race this event again next year so this was an excellent achievement for such a young crew. The boys entered 3 crews in the J16 single sculls. Max Gerrard who is a J15 did well to come 3rd in his heat and qualify for the semi-finals behind a Tideway Scullers and Stourport sculler. Jones and Ashburner did what we have become to expect of them by winning both their heats. In the first semi-final Ashburner and Gerrard were drawn in the same heat and finished 1st and 4th respectively. Ashburner going through to the finals. Jones led from the front in his semi-final and came home in 1st place 4 seconds ahead of a Stourport sculler. The final was lined up to be a good race with both Maidenhead scullers expected to medal. In the final Jones led from the start and moved out to a six second lead at the finish line to take a Gold with Ashburner moving from 3rd place to second place at 1000mtrs and following Jones home to take a Silver medal. Medal haul of the weekend increased to two Golds, one Silver and two Bronze which was a magnificent result for the club. |

Junior Inter-Regional Championships Sunday April 25th 2004 at the National Watersports Centre NottinghamMaidenhead Rowing Club junior crews representing Thames Up-River region came home with one Gold, one Silver and two Bronze medals from this prestigious event held at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham. This achievement from the juniors who competed from Maidenhead was a credit to the club and an indication of the depth of talent we have at the club at this junior level. The Championships were contested between 12 ARA Regions. All events were timed in the heats with the fastest 6 crews going through to the Grand finale with the others going into the Petite Finale. Maidenhead's medal haul helped secure the Thames Up-River region as Regional Champions. The first crew to race in the Grand Finals was our WJ15 2x of Ally Brooks and Louise Entwistle. They won their heat with ease but were 8 seconds slower than the winners of the other heat. In the finals Maidenhead were led off the start and at 500mtrs this was a 1 and a half length lead, during the next 500mtrs this lead was reduced to half a length. During the final 500mtrs both leading crews pushed hard but Maidenhead had to settle for a Silver at the finish line. The boys J15 double of Matt Best and Max Gerrard also won their heat but were placed in 3rd position overall taking into account the times of the other heat competitors. In the finals Maidenhead were in 4th place with 500mtrs to go, during the final 250mtrs the boys raised their rate of striking and managed to pip the fourth place crew on the line and take the Bronze medal. The boys J14 double of Jack Ryder and Philip Clapp also raced well and qualified for the Grand final by finishing a strong second in their heat. On heat times they were 3rd fastest crew going into the finals. The final was a good race with Maidenhead coming home about 1 length ahead of fourth place crew to take a well deserved Bronze medal. Final race for Maidenhead was in the WJ14 coxed quad of Owen Davies cox, Chrissie Wright stroke, Alice Ancora, Aimee Campbell and Rebehah Kerns. In their heat they were the fastest crew out of the blocks and they went on to win by 4 lengths. They went into the final being 1 second slower than the crew who won the other heat. Expecting a hard race they went off fast and took an early lead, this they continued to work on and crossed the line 1 and a half lengths ahead of second place Evesham to take the medal they wanted - Gold.

Birmingham Regatta Saturday 24th AprilThis is a fairly new regatta offering events for the very young juniors. Maidenhead sent along its beginners and Intermediate sections of the women's Junior squad who kept the Maidenhead flag flying at Birmingham Regatta on 24 April. They came away with 5 wins and a lot of good experience. The most memorable event of the day was when Lucy Brockwell competed in the WJ12 Single Sculling event. Her first race was against Evesham Rowing Club but was declared a dead heat. She had to go straight back to the start and do it all again. In the re-row she managed to find some hidden inner strength and amazed us all, not least her parents, by winning by 1 foot! She won her next race against an Avon County girl and faced Emma Kerns from Maidenhead in the final. Emma sculled an excellent race and won but we were all impressed by the hidden depths Lucy had shown. Emma Kerns also won in the WJ12 double sculls with her partner, Carmel Bevan. Carmel put in an impressive performance in her single as well to bring another pot home for Maidenhead. One of our youngest members, Lexy Dobson, competed in her first ever sculling race WJ11 singles and won in great style. The WJ13 quad who have only been rowing for 9 months were awarded joint place winners in their event. The crew consisted of Maddi Van Noorden, Maddi Reynolds, Anna Campbell and Emma Sanerkin, coxed by Katy Lion. All of the races were very close and all of the girls put on tremendous performances. A good, but long, day was had by all.
