National Schools Regatta 2007 Nottingham 25th – 27th May 2007

Maidenhead athletes bring home 6 crew boat medals: 3 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze

Over a weekend packed with more than 27 full hours of racing and with conditions varying between hot sunshine and light tail winds on the Friday and Saturday to a washed out very rainy and windy day on the Sunday. Maidenhead Junior boys and girls crews overall demonstrated yet again that they are a leading junior club by the medal haul won in 2007 against the top rowing Schools and Clubs in the Country.

Maidenhead Rowing Club entered 16 crews from a team of (16 girls and 9 boys, aged 14 to 18) in this years National Schools Regatta held at the National Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierrepoint, Nottingham.

This event is seen as the Schools equivalent to the National Championships, so the event is taken very seriously by top rowing schools as the Championship event results do affect the seeding for Schools at Henley Royal Regatta. Any medal is hard to come by and arguably seen as more difficult than National Championships.

Our thanks to our 2007 junior sponsors who include AP Printers, Michael Shanly Trust, Sportsmatch, Timberland and Oakley who have supplied several packages of boats and equipment to help our juniors continue to compete at this highest National Schools level competition.

Summary of Wins

Golds
CHG 4x Ally Brooks, Louise Entwistle, Sophie Delaney, Katy Lion.
GHG 2- Ally Brooks, Louise Entwistle
CGG 2x Sophie Delaney, Aimee Campbell

Silver
WJ14 2x Fifi Bevan, Gabby Watson

Bronze
J16 2- Ertan Hazine, Alex Ryde
J16 2x Sam McCoriston, Simon Lilley

This medal haul could have been higher if our top boy sculler Phil Clapp was well enough to compete and if both the WJ14 quad and WJ16 quad could have had slightly better luck on the day. The WJ14 quad missed out on a place in the finals by a fraction of a second and the WJ16 quad was moving through to Silver medal position in the final when a crew member caught a major crab in the difficult conditions and had to settle for 4th place.

Fridays Racing over 1000mtrs

Racing started off on Friday with Maidenhead’s youngest crew of Fifi Bevan and Gabby Watson competing in the WJ14 2x competition. In the semi-final Gabby and Fifi were worried about the crew from Hollingworth Lake and made sure that they got away to an excellent start to try to keep out of reach. They succeeded in this and were on their own comfortably from about 400m leaving Hollingworth a length down but comfortable while Northwich and Eton Excelsior fought for the third qualifying place.

In the final the girls had lucky lane 3 right next to LEH. They had a good start and went off in the lead for the first 100m closely followed by Evesham and LEH. By the 500 mark LEH had pulled away half a length and then increased their lead over the next 300m.Gabby and Fifi tried valiantly to pull back and started to make up ground on LEH whilst making sure that Evesham didn't sneak past on the other side. Sadly for Maidenhead, LEH proved to be stronger on the day crew and Maidenhead finished just under a length to take the Club’s first medal of the Championships, Silver.

The WJ14 girls quad scull with Lexy Dobson, Rachael Aldridge, Henrietta Jenkins and Felicity Young, coxed by Zoe Broadbent came third in their heat to qualify for the semi final in spite of their cox box failing to work. The cox box was repaired for the semi-final thanks to Oarsport but the girls were dissapointed to miss out on a place in the final by only 0.3 seconds. This event raced over only 1000 metres was expected to be difficult for this crew who take time to get into their stride, but the times of a very strong field in this event show that they are not far off the pace, and expect better results later in the season.

Saturday’s Results

The J16 quad of Ross McCoriston, Simon Lilley, George Poynter and Robert Ashburner were first to row on Saturday and completed the time trial with ease. There was then a tough draw for the semi final to include Evesham RC, unbeaten since their formation last Autumn, Sir William Borlase School and Marlow RC. The race went according to plan for the first half but then Evesham took a lead and were chased by the crews mentioned. Maidenhead could not stay with the pace in the third quarter of the race and finished fourth, out of the final qualifying places.

The Womens Championship quad sculls event saw Katy Lion, Sophie Delaney, Louise Entwistle and Ally Brooks race in its semi final moving out to over a lengths lead at 500m and steadily drawing away to win by a large margin. In the final the main competition was seen as Bedford High School who finished second at the Schools Head. Maidenhead again led from the start and gave another demonstration of top crew sculling by winning the event by twelve seconds and in a fast time. We are very fortunate to be able to put out a junior club quad that has four junior internationals on board. Maidenhead’s second medal of the event.

With Phil Clapp unavailable to compete in the Championship sculls it was left to Adam Lilley and Ertan Hazine to represent the club and both of them did well to make the semi finals where they finished 5th and 6th and therefore did not make the fina. The final which was won by a Charlie Cousins a Rob Roy sculler currently in the U23 GB squad and a previous J18 World rowing finalist.

The championship double sculls had Tim Wildbore and Danny Garett entered. They qualified for the semi final which was a good achievement in this tough field but then found the pace difficult and did not progress beyond that.

In the WJ15 girls quad sculls Maidenheads crew of Lexy Dobson was called in as a substitute at the last moment for the crew with Katherine Henderson, Emma Kerns, and Anna Campbell with Zoe Broadbent again coxing. This crew raced hard but missed out on qualifying for the semi final of this event by about 2 seconds.

Sunday Results

Sunday brought a significant change to the weather with very difficult conditions of strong following winds , large waves and heavy rain. This caused the organisers to announce that the event could be cancelled at any time due to bad weather. This meant that every heat time had to count as a final as if the weather were to worsen and the event cancelled then Sundays medals would be issued based upon times finished in earlier heats.

This final day of racing saw Maidenhead win a further 2 Gold medals and 2 Bronze medals.

First Gold medal on the Sunday came from Louise Entwistle and Ally Brooks who took a risk and switched from sculling to Championship Rowing to see if they could still win with just one oar each. Happily they proved in the time trial and the semi’s that they were moving the fastest of all boats being 4 seconds ahead of Henley RC who won the other semi final. The final was a tough race but Maidenhead managed to gain clear water on Henley RC by the 1000m mark During the second half of the course a strong attack came from LEH who in lane 2 seemed to be benefiting from faster conditions in lane 2. At the end of the race Maidenhead took Gold, LEH Silver and Henley RC Bronze.

Next race down the course was Championship 2x where Aimee Campbell was competing with Sophie Delaney. They had both won their semi finals in a time equal with Marlow RC. So a tough race was expected in the final. Moving out of the blocks quickly this Maidenhead crew opened up a good early lead and at 1000mtrs they led Marlow by 2 lengths. Sculling well during the difficult conditions of the second half of the course they maintained this lead to take the Championship Gold for this event.

The boys J16 coxless pair of Ertan Hazine and Alex Ryde rowing in their first regatta in this combination won the time trial and their semi final. This was important as due to deteriorating weather, the medals would have been awarded on the times of the last races if the organisers had decided that it was no longer safe to run a regatta. In the final the Chester Le Street and Dulwich College pairs took an early lead which they defended to the finish, with Maidenhead third but beating a pair from St Pauls School who had been in the crew that dominated the J16 eights event on Saturday and Stourport who won the National Inter Regional regatta earlier this year.

The J16 doubles event had the two halves of the quad racing . Both doubles progressed through the time trial to the semi finals. McCoriston and Lilley were third in their semi but had done enough to progress to the final. The Ashburner Poynter double were in the semi final that posted faster times than the other semi and they were fifth. In the final the Maidenhead boys went for an early medal position as on time form they would have been fifth or sixth. Thy managed to achieve the third position at half way and found themselves challenging Warrington for the silver at one point. They gave the race everything and in the last two strokes caught the rough water and capsized. There was then a wait to see if the boat had crossed the line before the chasing Borlase double finished. The coach of the boys thought they had crossed the line with their feet remaining in the shoes and therefore attached to the boat but their bodies in the water. The boat did not fully cross the line after the capsize, but only the bow bobble needs to cross the line to register a time, and the judges decision was that by the smallest of margins they had won the bronze medal.

Tom O’Rielly entered J16 single sculls but found the competition tough so did not progress past the processional race.

A very pleasing set of overall results from the whole junior section.

Thanks again to parents and coaches for their valuable support and assistance in making these 3 days run smoothly for everyone. I would just like to make a special mention to a few people who without their help then this would not happen.

A big thank you to Steve Clapp and Jamie Broadbent who helped out with boat and trailer transportation. Marilyn Entwistle and Fiona Truswell who handled entries, Carol Reynolds who provided this years Marque which was much needed to protect everyone from the sun and rain. Coaches who attended to look after the large number of Maidenhead crews Tom Jost, John Truswell, Orlando Fricker, Maggie Bevan and Sean Kerns. Sean for his excellent skills in ensuring all boats remain in good working order. Another extended Maidenhead junior support group. Of course a thank you to the coaches who help out during the year but could not make this event. We are already looking at improving results for 2008.

Maidenhead Rowing Club High Performance Juniors Compete at Gent Regatta May 12th & 13th and win impressive haul of International medals

Maidenhead Rowing Clubs High Performance juniors competed at Gent, Belgium International regatta to gain top level multi-5-lane race experience. All athletes performed well and everyone came home with at least one medal which was very pleasing for athletes, spectators and coaches.

Gold medals came from Adam Lilley who won 2 Golds over the weekend racing in a composite quad scull with Marlow RC. Katy Lion also won a Gold medal in Womens' quad sculls racing in a composite GB squad crew. Louise Entwistle put up an excellent performance at U23 level in a single scull and she went on to win the final after a very good race to take a Gold medal.

Silver medals came from Alice Ancora who as part of a composite Maidenhead / Marlow RC quad scull finished in 2nd behind the GB composite squad crew.

Ally Brooks and Louise Entwistle moved up to compete at U23 and finished 8 seconds behind a Belgium National squad crew to take a well earned Silver medal.

Bronze medals came from 4 Maidenhead junior athletes (Rebekah Kerns, Aimee Broadbent, Anna Campbell and Maddie Reynolds) who raced in a composite junior 8 with Henley Rowing Club to take a well deserved Bronze medal. One of the Henley members of the crew caught a crab which slowed the boat significantly and perhaps a higher medal could have been won. Katy Lion and her double scull partner from Bedford High School did well to take a Bronze medal in JW 2x.

This weekend sees Maidenhead Juniors compete at the National Schools Regatta in Nottingham from Friday 25th May through to Sunday 27th May. Last year the Maidenhead juniors finished in 3rd position overall in the medal tables. The squad is stronger in depth for 2007 so it will be interesting to see if the club can continue its excellent form.

Munich International Junior Regatta - May 5th and 6th

Two Maidenhead junior athletes were selected to represent GB at one of the toughest European International Junior regattas on the International circuit. This was of course a major achievement for the athletes and all the coaches involved at the club.

It was a credit to the club to have two of its athletes to be selected and now face the task of being tested out against some of the best rowing athletes in Europe. Performances at this regatta are looked at to help make decisions on the future path athletes should take when seeking selection for the junior Worlds to be held in Beijing in August this year.

At Munich it was a light head wind on the course on the Saturday morning with a much stronger head wind during Saturday afternoon. On the Sunday the head wing continued.

Both Maidenhead athletes enjoyed their time competing at Munich and they would have learnt a great deal from the experience, which they can now take back to their club crews.

Ally Brooks

On the Saturday Ally competed in a heat of JW1x and the task was to come first in the heat to make the A final, come second in the heat to make the B final any other position and you are out of the competition. Ally sculled well and racing strongly against 6 scullers she battled it out with a Belgium sculler and a Swiss sculler to take second place by 3 seconds and qualify for the B final. In the B final Ally sculled well but in a very stong head wind she found the conditions tough and finished in 5th place.

Ally’s main boat for the Sunday was the JW 2x where Ally teamed up with Sarah Cowburn to take 3rd place in their heat.

Also on the Sunday Ally was asked to step into the junior 8 rowing at 2. This GB scratch crew did well to finish a six lane heat in 3rd position only half a length off the winning crew. This qualified the crew for the final. In the final the eight did the best they could but with the various doubling up that took place during the day the toll of this was felt in the final where they finished in sixth place.

Phil Clapp

On the Saturday Phil competed in the JM 1x and again with the toughest of European competition being present this was a good test for Phil. After winning his heat against scullers from Slovenia, Germany, Portugal and another German sculler and qualifying for the A final Phil had a good scull in the final but could not match the pace of 2 slightly older scullers but was pleased to take home a Bronze medal. Phil can do this event again next year.

On the Sunday Phil tried out in a double scull and a quadruple sculling boat.

After finishing 2nd in his heat of the double sculls Phil and his partner went on to take 4th place in the final.

In the quad sculls event Phil finished in 1st place in his heat. A sub was put in for the final where they went on to finish 5th in the A final.

Next step for both Ally and Phil will be to attend final trials to be tested out in crew boats seeking the fastest GB crew boats possible to go forward to the Junior Worlds in Beijing this year.

Two Maidenhead Juniors Selected to Represent GB at Munich International Regatta

Maidenhead Rowing Club's top 5 junior athletes who have made it through the selection phases thus far were invited to a Spring Sculling training camp over 3 days based in Nottingham.

There were 50 top junior athletes from across the country invited to these trials - 30 girls (14 scullers and 16 rowers) and 20 boy scullers.

The objective of the camp was to rank these top junior athletes by carrying out 2000meter trials and seat racing. In doing so this ranking together with a percentage speed check was used to select the highest performing junior athletes for Munich International Regatta on May 5th and 6th.

The five Maidenhead athletes that went along to these trials all performed exceptionally well and their finish positions after day 1 in the sculling trials were as follows:

Maidenhead Girls
Ally Brooks led for the first 750m and finished 2nd;
Katy Lion finished an excellentl equal 3rd with 4 scullers;
Alice Ancora fell in just after the 1500meter mark and her timings to this point placed her about 9th and after two days of seat racing Alice moved up to 6th position;

Maidenhead Boys
Phil Clapp was in about 3rd position at 750m and then sculled through the leading scullers to win by 3 seconds and take the Number 1 slot. Adam Lilley performed well and finished in 13th place.

As a result of the 3 days Ally Brooks and Phil Clapp from Maidenhead have been selected to compete in singles at Munich International Regatta together with a crew boat. Ally has been selected in a double with Sarah Cowburn of Worcester RC and Phil Clapp is undergoing further trials with other athletes to decide if he should also be in a 2x or a quad. The standard of the boys sculling overall was high this year as the top 5 scullers all finished quite close together. A 3 day pre-Munich training camp is underway following these trials finishing on Wednesday 4th April.

This is another exceptional performance to not only have Maidenhead junior athletes selected to represent GB at Munich but to see the strength in depth of juniors from Maidenhead performing at this level.

At the next camp we are looking at adding at least one more boy and one more girl to compete at the small boats regatta which with a good performance from the athlete will result in an invitation back to final trials.

We are aiming to have Maidenhead junior athletes compete for all 3 levels of GB junior representation in 2007. This will be at GB France match for J16's in July, Coupe De La Jeunesse in Italy for J18's at the end of July and the ultimate junior level competition being the World junior championships in Beijing in August for J18's.

Maidenhead won the junior boys sculling division and finished second in the girls division

Maidenhead juniors continued to show excellent form at the 2nd round of formal testing for athletes seeking GB selection. The event was held in Boston, Lincolnshire and run over a 5k head format.

Following the first set of trials in November the numbers were reduced to 45 girls and 60 boys.

In division one on the Saturday the junior vwomen raced in singles sculls. Ally Brooks who went off No 1 sculled the course strongly but could see that Cowburn from Worcester RC had closed the gap at the finish. Ally was pleased to have taken second place overall finishing eighteen seconds ahead of the 3rd place sculler from Molesey.

Katy Lion had an excellent scull overtaking at least one sculler from her No 11 starting position and was very pleased to learn that she finished an outstanding 6th overall in this J18 event.

Alice Ancora who finished 28th at the November trials went off at No 26 and managed to overtake 2 scullers down the course and finished in 16th position overall.

In division 2 in the afternoon the boys raced over the same course. Conditions continued to be good for this time of year.

Phil Clapp who went off No 6 of the J18 boys had an excellent scull and paced himself well to finish in 1st place some four seconds ahead of Walker from Henley RC. This was just what the selectors were looking to see.

Adam Lilley put in the star performance improvement from the club. After finishing 104th at the November trials Adam had been working hard with Ergo's, land training and sculling. Wanting to do his best he set off the start aggresively and flew down the course and finished an incredible 13th overall moving up 91 places, which is a very special achievement to make in 3 months.

On the Sunday some of the leading athletes were put together in 2x's and 2-'s to try out combinations.

Phil Clapp was put with John Preston of Yarm School in a 2x and they went off No 1 and managed to hold off a sustained high rating attack from a Henley Rowing Club 2x. Both crews finished in the same time so jointly won the division.

Adam Lilley competed again in the sculling section and finished in 12th place. This result still put him ahead of some local rivals with the knowledge he can still go faster.

Katy Lion and Ally Brooks competed in the coxless pairs rowing division and although they finished in a respectable 8th position they had hoped to have gone a little faster at these trails. With limited rowing time they still managed to beat some established pairs.

Alice Ancora competed again in the singles sculls. With a change to her length of sculls set up this seemed to do the trick as she sculled the course really strongly to pick up a well earned second place finish position, finishing ahead of 3 scullers she finished behind yesterday.

All five junior athletes have done themselves a lot of good and will now be serious selection contenders as they continue training towards the Spring trials in April over 2k at Dorney Lake or Caversham.

An excellent weekend for the club being tested against the best juniors in the country. Entries for the Spring trials will be cut back again to something line 25 girls and 30 boys.

Reading Small Boats Head Sunday 15th October 3,300m downstream

Maidenhead Rowing Clubs Advanced Junior Girls and Senior Women's Squad squads competed in a total of nine events at the Reading Head, coming away with three junior and one senior win.

The race was held over a 3,300 metre downstream back to the clubhouse at Caversham bridge, under ever changing weather conditions.

Junior Girls

The junior girls entered 4 events and recorded three wins.

In Div 1 WJ16 1x, Maidenheads Aimee Broadbent sculled extremely well to win the event in 17min 44 seconds, 34 secs ahead of of Miles of Headington school, Oxford .

In the WJ15 4x+ , Maidenhead's crew of Lexy Dobson, Anna Campbell, Lucy Brockwell and Katherine Henderson with cox Zoe Broadbent worked hard to keep the Headington school A crew from overtaking them which they did, but the Headington A crew finished in a time 19 seconds quicker. Headington A later went on to improve their time in the second division, so the same crew came first and second with Maidenhead in third place, ahead of Headington B.

The final event in the division saw the WJ14s in action; Rebecca Reeve sculled very well to finish the top sculler in 18m 35 secs in this division, however Emily Beard from Reading, sculling in Div 2, came home to win in a time of 18m17s. In this race Maidenhead also took 4th, with Felicity Young in 19m 40s, 5th Henrietta Jenkins in 19.52, and 6th with Rachel Aldridge in 21.03 who, unfortunately, had an equipment failure when her foot plate fell off.

In Div 2 the weather changed, the wind abated, the sun shone and the course seemed to row quicker. In the WJ15 1x Anna Campbell sculled really well to win in 18.23 from Katherine Henderson in second in 19.17 and Lucy Brockwell in fourth place in 19.26.

The WJ14 4 x+ crew of Felicity Young, Rebecca Reeve, Henrietta Jenkins and Rachel Aldridge with cox Zoe Broadbent flew down the course to win in a time of 16m 02s, 44 secs ahead of their nearest rivals from Headington school Oxford. This was a first win for the new boat supplied through sponsorship with Sports Match and the Michael Shanly Trust.

Women's Squad

Maidenhead Women's Squad, now in their sixth week of winter training, kicked off their head racing season at this event, entering 5 events and coming home with one win and some other good finishes.

Boats entered included two Women's Senior coxed fours, racing in both divisions. The first, consisting of Helen Stewart, Sarah Hzecko, Hayley Wildmore, Jo Macbeth and cox Emily Webster raced at Senior 3 and Senior 4 levels in different divisions recording a best time of 16 minutes 18 seconds, and their best position was 2nd in the S3 Class.

The club's most senior four, raced at S2 level in both divisions. The crew consisted of Alison Evans, Claire Wallace, Keri Johnson, Caroline Dakers and cox Emma Sanerkin. Their best time was 15 min 30 seconds and they won this competition against the home crew from Reading Rowing Club

The squad also entered a Women's Senior 4 Quad consisting of Sarah Bennett-Baggs, Rosemary Elder, Olivia McDermott and Louisa Sutherland-Spiller in Division1 and Helen Jacob, Rosemary Elder, Louisa Sutherland-Spiller and Gillian Kidd in Division 2- The best time was recorded by the division 1 crew of 15:29 which was 2nd in class. Despite difficult conditions and a strong headwind all crews did a good job and maintained their positions down the course.

Vicki Sims also entered her single in the S2 class, she came 2nd in class with a time of 16:30 - a very creditable performance racing the day after her win in the Pairs Head.

Two Maidenhead crews win at the Pairs Head in London

Maidenhead Rowing Club entered 8 crews in this years pairs head of the river race held in London over a 4000 metre testing course from Chiswick Bridge to Hammersmith Bridge on Saturday 15th October 2005.

This years club entry consisted of 16 athletes making up 8 crews, (8 girls, 7 boys and one senior woman) the club entered 2 crews in girls J18 event, 3 crews in boys J16 event, 2 girls in the girls J16 event and one crew in the Mixed Doubles event.

This is a major event for crews to establish how well they are going against other top athletes across the country. Racing conditions were variable on the day with the later starting crews suffering from a gutsy headwind and choppy water over most of the course. 330 crews entered this years event.

Winning crews

Louise Entwistle and Ally Brooks continued their winning form and put up another good performance to win the WJ18 junior girls division in a time of 14m 07secs and 30seconds behind Olympian Debbie Flood and partner.

Vicky Sims and Phil Clapp entered the Mixed Doubles event and demonstrated just how well they could scull together after just a few practise outings. They went off strongly and soon drew up upon the mixed doubles ahead and went past them to win in a time of 13mins 21secs, 40secs ahead of the second place crew.

Top Performances:

Aimee Campbell and Katie Lion did well on the Tideway by finishing in second place behind Maidenhead A crew in a time of 14mins 41secs. This was an excellent result for the club to take the first and second place at this age group.

Maidenheads J16 boys double scullers saw three Maidenhead crews battle it out for who was to be the top Maidenhead boys J16 crew. This went to Alex Ryde and Ertan Hazine who sculled and steered the course well to finish in 3rd place in a time of 13mins 30secs and only 13 seconds away from the winners of this event. Next double home Simon Lilley and Ross McCoriston finished in 5th place and only 0.2secs ahead of 6th place Maidenhead crew of Robert Ashburner and George Poynter both crew given the time of 13mins 52secs.

In the Womens Junior 16 division Maidenheads top J16 crew who won this event last year were injured for this event. That left an opportunity for Gabby Watson and FiFi Bevan to participate at the head for a first time and as they are only J14 they had to race up a few years. Nonetheless they competed well and finished the course in a time of 15mins 33secs to take 4th place with Aimee Broadbent and Maddie Reynolds finishing in 15mins 37secs to take 5th place.

A big thank you to our boat sponsors this year who include AP Printers and Michael Shanly Trust.

Another very good days results for the club.

Maidenhead Rowing Club Junior athletes Win 6 events at Wallingford Long Distance Sculls

Maidenhead were represented by some of our junior section at Wallingford Long distance sculls held over a challenging and twisty 4000 metres up-stream course. Junior athletes in the age groups of J14 to J18 competed, some Maidenhead athletes competed above their age group.

Wallingford Head is seen as a curtain raiser for all athletes aiming to do well in 2007. This year Wallingford accepted 560 entries.

Weather was good for this time of the year with a slight tail wind in places.

The junior section of the club continued where they left off last year, and went on to win six events plus some high placings from other athletes.

Winning Crews

In both the boys J16 age group, and the girls J18 age group categories, Maidenhead pulled off a double by winning both the singles and doubles in these age groups.

In the boys J16 age group Ertan Hazine and Alex Ryde did extremely well to win the J16 2xs in a time of 15mins 27secs, ahead of two Hampton doubles.

Ertan Hazine went on to also win the J16 singles event in a time of 16mins 31secs from eleven competitors and 32secs ahead of Hyman of Claires Court School.

In the girls WJ18 age group Louise Entwistle and Ally Brooks finished in a fast time of 15mins 54 secs and 53secs ahead of Molesey BC.

Ally Brooks went on to win her single sculls at WJ18 level in a time of 17mins 40secs, 20secs ahead of her nearest rival and against a strong field of 35 scullers.

Robert Ashburner competed in J15 single sculls and he won his division in a time of 17mins 07secs against 11 other scullers in his age group.

Sixth win came from a fast WJ14 double of Gabby Watson and Fifi Bevan who competed one year up to win WJ15s event in a time that was also faster than the winning WJ16 double. So an excellent achievement from these young guns. Their time of 17mins 30secs placed them 23secs ahead of Molesey BC.

Other Finish positions

Louise Entwistle moved up to try WS2 single sculls and was pushed hard down the course eventually overtaken by the older sculler from Wallingford and ended up finishing 2nd in a time of 17mins 24secs out of the six scullers in this higher sculling class.

In the boys J16 double sculls Maidenhead athletes Ross McCorriston and Simon Lilley and the crew of George Poynter and Robert Ashburner did well to finish in 4th and 5th place out of 10 boys double at this age group.

Carmel Bevan racing in WJ15 sculls did well to finish in second place , 8seconds behind Anderson from LEH. 24 scullers competed in this age group. Gabby Watson finished in 4th place in a time of 18mins 56secs, Fifi Bevan finished in 5th place in a time of 19mins 15secs and Lexy Dobson in a loaned boat finished in 20th place in a time of 23mins 27secs. Gabby, Lexy and Fifi scullers all racing one year above their age group.

Katie Lion also finished 2nd out of 22 scullers competing in the WJ16 age group. Lion finished 16secs behind Cummings of Henley RC. Aimee Broadbent finished 13th in a time of 19mins 26secs with Maiddie Reynolds finishing in 16th place in a time of 19mins 47secs.

In mens J18 single sculls Phil Clapp had some overtaking to contend with on the course but managed to finish 4th out of 60 scullers in a time of 16mins 03secs. Tim Wildbore finished in 20th position in a time of 16mins 53secs.

In the WJ15 double sculls Maidenhead B crew of Anna Campbell and Lexy Dobson finished in 5th place in a time of 18mins 40secs.

In the WJ16 double sculls division Aimee Broadbent and Carmel Bevan finished in 2nd place in a time of 18mins 16secs.

In the WJ18 double sculls Katie Lion and Aimee Campbell finished in 3rd position in a time of 17mins 27secs which was not bad out of 13 crews.

In WJ18 single sculls Aimee Campbell had a good scull and managed to finish in front of some good scullers in 6th position out of 35 scullers in a time of 18mins 22secs.

In the boys J16 single sculls Alex Ryde finished high up in 3rd position out of 22 scullers in a time of 17mins 08secs.

The boys (Ross McCoriston, Simon Lilley, Michael Cleveland and Tom ORielly) also entered a J16 quad and after a good scull they finished in 3rd place out of 3 36 secs behind the winning crew from Hampton School.

Next events include the Pairs Head in London on Saturday 14th and Reading Head on Sunday 15th.
